The Calendar
What is the Calendar?
The Calendar is our way of managing the Tahoe Pad. Since there are 11 of us and our guests, we need a way to organize the beds and rooms in the pad. The calendar is a way to let others know when you'll be at the pad and who you'll be bringing. It's also the way in which we will be doing the book keeping. By listing your guests on the calendar, it makes the job of keeping track of the money much easier for our esteemed bookkeeper, Daniel. HOWEVER, IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO COLLECT THE GUEST FEES FOR YOUR GUESTS! The $20 per night guest fee will be added to your account.
Installing and Using the Calendar.
The calendar we will be using is called Sunbird. The calendar is a stand alone software that you will need to download to your computer. This software syncs with a calendar on the server which keeps track of all entries for all people signed up for the Tahoe Pad Calendar. In order to use the calendar, you need to download the approprate version of the software from the Sunbird download site (I.E. if you have a PC and run Microsoft Windows, download and install the Sunbird-win32.zip file). The following steps will walk you through the rest of the installation. If you have problems, feel free to contact me at greg@ski.org.
Once the .zip file is downloaded, you will need to extract it. Double click on the .zip file, then click "extract." You can create a folder called "Sunbird" and the software will be extracted there. Run the Sunbird application (.exe). When the software starts up, it may tell you it is deleating old setting, no problem! Accept this. Once the software is running you will see a calendar on your screen. Click on the "Subscribe to Remote Calendar" link under File in the upper toolbar. A window will appear asking for the calendar name, call it "TheTahoePad". Choose a color, and enter "https://darwin.ski.org/cal/greg_ski.ics" for the remote Server URL and click the Automatically publish button. You may get a message saying the Server Certificate has Expired, click OK. Next you will get a screen saying the computer can't verify the identity of Darwin.ski.org. Not to worry, check the button to Accept the certificate permanently, then OK. you are now ready to roll!
This is all a one time configuration!!! Once this is done, the calendar program lives on your computer and talks with calendar server on my computer, and you are ready to go. Whenever you start the program from now on, there will be a calendar called "TheTahoePad" under the calendars tab. All you need to do to use the calendar is start the program, double click on the days you will be staying at the pad, and indicate how many guests will be staying with you. For example, if you're staying the night of December 10 and have two guests, double click on December 10, type your name +2 ("Greg +2") as the title, and click the button to have the event last all day. If you're staying multiple days, you can either enter them in one at a time, or as one event specifying the start and end date. IMPORTANT: ONLY LIST THE FIRST DAY OF THE NIGHT YOU STAY AT THE HOUSE AND CLICK THE EVENT AS LASTING ALL DAY.
