GUIDES TO THE EVALUATION OF PERMANENT IMPAIRMENT
Chaper 12--The Visual System--5th edition, 2001

This 36 page document describes the calculations in the vision chapter of the "AMA Guides to the Evaluation of Permanent Impairment." The AMA Guides express impairment of the whole person as a single number, based on the impairment numbers for each organ system.

The impairment of the visual system is based on Impairment of Visual Acuity and Impairment of Visual Field. If needed, an adjustment may be made for other factors not reflected in acuity or field.

The impairment of visual acuity is primarily based on the best-corrected binocular acuity (60%) with an adjustment for each eye separately (20% each).

The impairment of the visual field is similarly based on the binocular field (60%) with an adjustment for the field of each eye separately (20% each).
