INTRODUCTION

The Smith-Kettlewell Rehabilitation Engineering Center performs research and development activities for the visually impaired, blind, and deaf-blind. The majority of these activities are focused on the development of technology-related applications for this population, but also include the necessary development of new scientific knowledge to underpin these activities. The Center is supported by grants from the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research, The Smith-Kettlewell Eye Research Institute, and other sources.

This Summary Report presents a brief overview of some of the highlights from the most recent five-year reporting period (February 1990-January 1995). The list of projects here is not exhaustive, and more detailed information on each project area can be found in individual Annual Reports and the referenced publications produced by the RERC during this period. Copies of all such reports and publications can be obtained from the Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center office.
