| In the summer of 2001, I embarked upon a volunteer medical trip to Nepal, offering my services as a pediatric ophthalmologist to the Tilganga Eye Centre, in Katmandu. Unfortunately, Tilganga doesn't have a pediatric specialist. Nepal, a country that has limited resources for health care, must concentrate its efforts on life-threatening illness and pediatric eye care is, understandably, not a priority. While eye afflictions may not seem as critically threatening as the host of fatal diseases that continue to plague the Nepalese, the successful treatment of an eye disorder can nevertheless be a determining factor in the long-term health and well-being of the individual. Children suffering from vision problems have higher chances of dying in a place like Nepal. While in Katmandu, I examined over 700 children with a range of eye problems and performed 30 surgical procedures. A second volunteer trip to the Tilganga Eye Centre is scheduled for the summer of 2002 or 2003. | ||||||||
