Smith-Kettlewell Awarded NEI Institutional Training Grant

The Smith-Kettlewell Eye Research Institute in San Francisco, California, is the recipient of a 5-year NIH/ NEI training grant (1T32EY025201-01A1) entitled "Postdoctoral Training in Vision Research". NIH post-doctoral research fellowships awards are designed to facilitate the transition from graduate school to a research career. A NIH fellowship might increase opportunities for a young researcher to work with leaders in the field and/or increase his or her visibility in the biomedical profession.

The Smith-Kettlewell Eye Research Institute is a non-profit, independent research institute, established in 1963, and dedicated to basic and clinical research in human vision with an emphasis on strabismus, its associated sensory and motor conditions, and on visual rehabilitation. The training grant fellowship is open for research in any field of visual neuroscience, oculomotor control, and low-vision/blindness rehabilitation. Postdoctoral fellows are trained to specialize in translational vision research and rehabilitation engineering. The majority of the faculty are full-time researchers and have no teaching duties, so fellows experience a great deal of interaction with their faculty mentors. Interactions are facilitated by the group all being housed within the same building and all working in clinically relevant vision research. All areas of the research process are represented to the trainees: proposal, critique, performance, as well as participation in scientific and ethics seminars. This fellowship program forms a critical component of the research vitality and capacity of the Institute. The fellowship requires a doctoral degree and is normally awarded for two years, with the most successful fellows often being invited to continue as sponsored investigators. Applications from individuals with disabilities or other underrepresented groups are particularly encouraged.
