A Digitizing Touch-tablet/synthetic Speech Computer Interface

Publication Type: Journal Article
Publication: IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology, Volume 13, Issue 4, p.1833-1834 (1991)
Abstract:

Two computer interfaces for the blind using touch-pad and synthetic speech technology are described. One is a specialpurpose file manager, and the other is a general-purpose screen reader, in which the user merely points to any spot on the touch-pad and hears the screen contents at the corresponding point enunciated. Both systems offer simplicity of operation and low cost. Factors used in the design of the systems are discussed, along with hardware and software features. Results of user experience and the system's transition to an available product are described.
