Full Stack Node.js JavaScript Developer

 The Smith-Kettlewell Eye Research Institute, located in San Francisco, is seeking a full-stack JavaScript web developer who is passionate about accessibility to work in the Coughlan lab. We are looking for someone who can build both front-end and back-end logic along with the current designers and engineers on the team. The ideal applicant will have prior experience building applications for screen reader users.

Job Duties

In addition to related activities as required, the primary responsibilities of this position include:

  • Creating back-end logic that communicates with the database or external APIs
  • Build front-end applications that are easy to use for screen reader users
  • Writing reusable, testable, and efficient code
  • Implementation of security and data protection
  • Design and implementation of low-latency, high-availability, and performant applications
  • Implementation of internationalization
  • Creation of offline first applications (progressive web apps)
  • Manage databases


  • Strong proficiency in JavaScript
  • Knowledge of Node.js and frameworks such as Feathers / Express
  • Knowledge of front-end frameworks such as React / Lit / Vue / Angular
  • Understanding the nature of asynchronous programming and its quirks and workarounds
  • Knowledge of HTML and CS
  • Familiarity with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG)
  • Basic proficiency in Aria for accessibility
  • Understanding of user authentication and authorization between multiple systems, servers, and environments
  • Integration of multiple data sources and databases into one system
  • Understanding fundamental design principles behind a scalable applicatio
  • Understanding differences between multiple delivery platforms, such as mobile vs. desktop, and optimizing output to match the specific platform
  • Creating database schemas that represent and support business processes
  • Implementing automated testing platforms and unit tests
  • Proficient understanding of code versioning tools, such as Git
  • Knowledge of the web Audio API
  • Willingness to learn new development techniques and technology
  • Ability to work well within a team
  • Ability to work without significant oversight

Desired Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in computer science or related field
  • Extensive familiarity with screen readers such as Voice Over, Nonvisual Desktop Access, Orca, and Job Access With Speech
  • Significant familiarity with non-semantic auditory interfaces such as Audio Games
  • Familiarity with audio editing and recording software, such as Reaper, ProTools, Gold Wave, or Audacity
  • Knowledge of Emscripten and WASM
  • Knowledge of C++ and python


  • 3+ years experience as a professional programmer
