Sustaining a Global Network for Communication and Collaboration in Vision Science

For more than four decades, Hoover R. Chan provided an extraordinary service to the global vision research community through his stewardship of the Color and Vision Network (CVNet). Since the early 1980s, CVNet – personally funded and maintained by Hoover – has served as a vital communication hub where vision scientists worldwide share research resources, scientific advances, conference announcements, job opportunities, and scholarly discussion. Few platforms have done more to foster connection, collaboration, and continuity across the field of vision science.

To ensure that this essential resource continues to serve future generations of researchers, Smith-Kettlewell Eye Research Institute is sponsoring the ongoing maintenance and moderation of CVNet. The Hoover Chan CVNet Fund was established to support this effort and to honor Hoover’s long-standing commitment to open scientific exchange and community building in vision science.

Our Mission

Our mission is to carry forward Hoover Chan’s commitment to open scientific exchange by sustaining the Color and Vision Network (CVNet) as a vital resource for the international vision research community.

What We Fund

The Hoover Chan CVNet Fund supports the continued operation and sustainability of the Color and Vision Network (CVNet), including:

  • Ongoing technical maintenance of the CVNet platform to ensure reliability, security, and accessibility
  • Moderation and administration to maintain the quality, relevance, and collegiality of community discussions
  • Infrastructure and hosting costs required to support a global, high-traffic communication network
  • Platform improvements and updates that enhance usability and long-term sustainability
  • Stewardship of community standards and archives, preserving CVNet as a trusted resource for the vision science community

CVNet is not a grant-making program; rather, it is a shared community resource. The Hoover Chan CVNet Fund ensures that this essential infrastructure remains available to researchers, trainees, and clinicians worldwide.

Get Involved

Your support helps sustain a global communication resource that has connected vision scientists for decades. There are several ways to get involved:
