Have You Heard About the Latest Products for people who have vision loss, FDA Cleared or Not?

Abstract – Dr. Ron Schuchard will review the recent research and development for products that are marketed for treatment of vision loss. This review draws from his experiences as a vision rehabilitation researcher and as a FDA senior staff member.  Attendees will also be encouraged to ask about treatments for vision loss that are of interest to them.Description – FDA registers, clears or approves products (devices, drugs and biologics) for marketing depending on the level of risk to the user.  The devices include a large range of technology from optics (e.g., magnifiers, telescopes and other optical aids) to digital health (e.g., home based visual function testing and navigation aids on smart phones and tablets). This informative discussion will provide a review of the recent products that have come on the market with specific examples of technology research and development including performance studies and other FDA processes that led to marketing the products for the blind and visually impaired population.  Join Dr. Don Fletcher, one of the world’s leading authorities on Low Vision Rehabilitation, to share experiences and learn about the things that help you maintain a full and happy life while living with low vision. Low Vision Support Group, 11/6/19: How Come I Have Trouble Seeing When My Eye Doctor Says My Vision Is Fine?

Abstract – Common age related changes in components of the eye reduce the light level to the back of the eye and reduce the contrast of objects and produce glare. These changes result in poor vision function under conditions frequently encountered in daily life. The discrepancy between test results at the eye doctor’s office done using high contrast and high light levels and daily life conditions will be illustrated using results from the SKI study on vision and aging. The SKI study tested 900 older observers living in Marin County and followed them for 12-15 years. LVSG: How the EYEs function / How the PERSON functions, two points of view

Abstract – I will discuss insights that my work in vision rehabilitation has given me regarding the nature of the visual system. “Vision” can be seen as a black box, the input of which consists of visual stimuli, while the output is visually-guided behavior in a dynamic environment. This means that the perception and recognition of visual stimuli is not the endpoint of visual performance, but only a necessary half-way point. It also means that the usual stationary or time-limited vision tests do not fully reflect the continuing interaction of vision and behavior. One example is letter chart acuity vs. reading. Letter chart acuity (one letter at a time) tests only the retinal area where the letter is projected.  Even for a 20/200 letter, this is less than 1 degree. Reading involves a continuous process of letter and word recognition over a significantly larger area – the visual span. The same visual signals that are used for letter/word/content recognition in the ventral stream, are simultaneously used in parallel in the dorsal stream to guide our eye movements. This part of our vision happens entirely outside our conscious awareness Without word recognition, we could not read. However, without appropriate eye movements, we could not read either. In the clinic, as in research, the conscious processing of visual information has received far more attention than the subconscious part. Both sides need to be studied.  Successful vision rehabilitation must address both. https://ski.org/users/august-colenbrander Host: Dr. Donald Fletcher Join Dr. Don Fletcher, one of the world’s leading authorities on Low Vision Rehabilitation, to share experiences and learn about the things that help you maintain a full and happy life while living with low vision. Low Vision Support Group, 5/1/19: Audio Description

Audio Description (sometimes called video description, or Description Video Service- DVS) is a translation of visual images into words for people with vision impairments. While many blockbuster movies and popular TV shows come with audio descriptions, a lot of video content is left undescribed and inaccessible. Home movies, trailers, educational videos, cute pet videos, and other video content that for lack of funds, lack of importance, or lack of time have not been described.   YouDescribe is free tool designed and developed by Smith-Kettlewell to add audio description to any YouTube video. YouDescribe allows you the viewer to request videos for description from volunteer and professional describers. Or you can ask a friend, family member or teacher to do the description! All you need to view is a computer with internet access, or an iPhone/Tablet. All your friends and family need to describe something for you is a computer and a microphone.   Charity Pitcher-Cooper, audio description enthusiast, and project manager of YouDescribe will be showcasing the YouDescribe application for viewers, and teaching how to use it on your lap top or iphone/pad.                   -How to request audio description for the content you want to see!                   -How to search for already described videos you can view right now.                   -How to rate videos so our sighted volunteers can improve techniques.                   -And how to get your family and friends excited about describing for YOU.
